Medical Definition of Nitrofurazone

1. 2-((5-nitro-2-furanyl)methylene)hydrazinecarboxamide. A topical anti-infective agent effective against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. It is used for superficial wounds, burns, ulcers, and skin infections. Nitrofurazone has also been administered orally in the treatment of trypanosomiasis. Pharmacological action: anti-infective agents, local, anti-infective agents, urinary, trypanocidal agents. Chemical name: Hydrazinecarboxamide, 2-((5-nitro-2-furanyl)methylene)- (12 Dec 1998)
