1. Proposed substitute for the term anaesthesiology to indicate the extent to which the specialty previously based almost completely on administration of anaesthetics has come to involve equally important roles and responsibilities outside the operating room, including management of acute and chronic pain, and care of critically ill patients and women in labour.
