Medical Definition of Schaffer's test

1. A test for nitrites in the urine; urine is decolorised with animal charcoal and then 4 ml of a 10% solution of acetic acid and 3 drops of a 5% solution of potassium ferrocyanide are added; if nitrites are present, an intense yellow colour will be produced. (05 Mar 2000)
