Medical Definition of Harvey sarcoma virus
1.
One of a family of oncogenes, first identified as transforming genes of Harvey and Kirsten murine sarcoma viruses. (Name from rat sarcoma because Harvey virus, though a mouse virus, obtained its transforming gene during passage in a rat). Transforming protein coded is p21ras, a GTP-binding protein with GTPase activity, that resembles regulatory G-proteins.
