Medical Definition of Receptor downregulation

1. A phenomenon observed in many cells: following stimulation with a ligand the number of receptors for that ligand on the cell surface diminishes because internalisation exceeds replenishment. Often used very loosely, thus destroying the utility of the term. This entry appears with permission from the Dictionary of Cell and Molecular Biology (11 Mar 2008)
