1. A group of chronic, relapsing, sometimes fatal skin diseases characterised clinically by the development of successive crops of vesicles and bullae, histologically by acantholysis and immunologically by serum autoantibodies directed against antigens in the intracellular zones of the epidermis. The specific disease is usually indicated by a modifying term, but the term pemphigus is often used alone to designate pemphigus vulgaris. Origin: Gr.
