1. The vestibulocochlear nerve is responsible for the sense of hearing and balance (body position sense). Lesions of the eighth nerve can result in deafness, tinnitus, dizziness, vertigo and vomiting. Synonym: cranial nerve VIII. (27 Sep 1997)
