Basic polypeptide from the venom of the honey bee (apis mellifera); it contains 62 amino acids, has cytolytic properties, causes contracture of muscle, releases histamine and disrupts surface tension, probably due to lysis of cell and mitochondrial membranes.
Synonym: melittin; melliten.
