Medical Definition of Beta-thionase

A multifunctional pyridoxal phosphate enzyme. In the second stage of cysteine biosynthesis it catalyses the reaction of homocysteine with serine to form cystathionine with the elimination of water.
Chemical name: L-Serine hydro-lyase (adding homocysteine)
