1. Ballottement of the kidney in cases of nephroptosis, especially when there is also a renal tumour, the hypoglossal nerve lies directly upon the external carotid artery, whereby this vessel may be distinguished from the internal carotid when ligation is necessary. (05 Mar 2000)
