Medical Definition of Warm agglutinins

1. Antibodies directed against self antigens, that is a normal tissue component. An immunoglobulin is produced in response to a normally occuring antigen in the same patient. This reaction results from the immune system wrongly recognising itself as foreign and the resulting reaction produces damage, typically in the form of inflammation. See: rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, myasthenia gravis. (18 Nov 2007)
