Medical Definition of Trichomycetosis

1. Formerly used to mean any disease of the hair caused by a fungus; presently synonymous with trichonocardiosis or trichomycosis axillaris. In present usage, trichomycosis is a misnomer because the causative agent of the disease is a nocardia (an entity intermediate between fungus and bacterium) or Corynebacterium and not a true fungus. Synonym: trichomycetosis. Origin: tricho-+ G. Mykes, fungus, + G. -osis, condition (05 Mar 2000)
