Medical Definition of Transport protein

1. A class of transmembrane protein that allows substances to cross plasma membranes far faster than would be possible by diffusion alone. A major class of transport proteins expend energy to move substances (active transport), these are transport ATPases. See: facilitated diffusion, symport, antiport.
