Medical Definition of Sigma factor
1. Initiation factor (86 kD) that binds to E. Coli DNA dependent RNA polymerase and promotes attachment to specific initiation sites on DNA. Following attachment, the sigma factor is released. This entry appears with permission from the Dictionary of Cell and Molecular Biology (11 Mar 2008)
