Medical Definition of Phycobilisome

1. An accessory light energy harvesting structure in cyanobacteria. They have cores of allophycocyanin with radiating rods composed of discs of phycocyanin and phycoerythrin. Linker polypeptides attach the core to the thylakoid membranes. These structures, 20-70 nm across, contain the pigments named above that transfer light energy to chlorophyll A. The pigments are extracted and used as fluorochromes for labelling various probe reagents. Origin: Gr. Soma = body (14 Oct 1997)
