Medical Definition of Organophosphates

1. A series of phosphorus-containing organic compounds usually also containing a halide ion which reacts with cholinesterase. Organophosphates phosphorylate cholinesterase and thus irreversibly inhibit it. Used as insecticides; have also been used as war gases. (05 Mar 2000)
