Medical Definition of Ophthalmic acid

1. A tripeptide occurring in lens, similar to glutathione but differing in the replacement of cysteine by alpha-amino-n-butyric acid (i.e., in the replacement of -SH by -CH3); a potent inhibitor of glyoxalase. Compare: norophthalmic acid. (05 Mar 2000)
