Medical Definition of Onomatopoiesis
1. The making of a name or word, especially to express or imitate a natural sound (e.g., hiss, crash, boom); in psychiatry, the tendency to make new words of this type is said to characterise some persons with schizophrenia. See: neologism. Origin: G. Onoma, name, + poiesis, making (05 Mar 2000)
