1. An anadromous species of salmon found in the streams of the pacific coast from sacramento north, and also common in japan. It is used frequently in genetic and other medical research. It is called dog salmon and chum salmon, the latter name possibly from chinook jargon for spots or writing, with reference to its body markings. (12 Dec 1998)
