Cytoplasmic proteins that bind oestrogens and migrate to the nucleus where they regulate DNA transcription. Evaluation of the state of oestrogen receptors in breast cancer patients has become clinically important and determines the likelihood of response to anti-oestrogen therapy with tamoxifen.
