Medical Definition of Muramidase

1. Glycosidase that hydrolyses the bond between N acetyl muramic acid and N acetyl glucosamine, thus cleaving an important polymer of the cell wall of many bacteria. Present in tears, saliva and in the lysomes of phagocytic cells, it is an important antibacterial defence, particularly against gram-positive bacteria.
