Medical Definition of Mevinolin

1. Intermediate in terpene synthesis, an analogue of compactin, a fungal metabolite that is used to lower plasma low density lipoprotein levels. It acts as an inhibitor of HMG CoA reductase, the rate controlling enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis.
