Medical Definition of Merrf syndrome

1. One of the mitochondrial encephalomyopathies characterised by myoclonic epilepsy and ragged red fibres of muscle tissue. Red muscle tends to be rich in mitochondria. Biochemical tests disclose changes in the enzymes of the respiratory chain. (12 Dec 1998)
