Medical Definition of Marker gene

A specific gene that allows the phenotype of particular cells to be easily identified. This is typically within cells that are grown in culture or in animal models.
Examples include an enzyme that can be used to activate a colour reagent, a reporter gene, a selectable marker such as antibiotic resistance or a cell membrane protein with a characteristic epitope that can be detected using antibody detection systems.
