1. 3 alpha-hydroxy-5 beta-cholanic acid. Bile acid formed from chenodeoxycholate by bacterial action, usually conjugated with glycine or taurine. It acts as a detergent to solubilise fats for absorption and is itself absorbed. It is used as cholagogue and choleretic. Pharmacological action: cholagogues and choleretics. Chemical name: Cholan-24-oic acid, 3-hydroxy-, (3alpha,5beta)- (12 Dec 1998)
