Medical Definition of Large woody debris

1. Dead woody material greater than 20" in diameter on the ground or in a stream or river. It may consist of logs, trees, or parts of trees. Large woody debris contributes to long-term site productivity and health in several ways. It supplies nutrients to the soil, supports symbiotic fungi that are beneficial to conifers, and provides habitat for beneficial rodents and insects. (05 Dec 1998)
