Medical Definition of Hypericin

1. A compound derived from the herb St. John's wort. It is an experimental treatment for HIV and human papillornavirus (HPV). Hypericin inhibits the assembly and shedding of virus particles in infected cells. A synthetic version has been developed. Hypericin's main side effect is extreme photosensitivity. (09 Oct 1997)
