Medical Definition of Hypercholesteraemia

1. A medical term which means that abnormally high concentrations of cholesterol are present in the bloodstream.This can lead to heart disease, hardening of the arteries, heart attacks, and strokes. An abnormal elevation of blood cholesterol. Can in some cases be caused by a defect in lipoprotein metabolism or, for example: defects in the LDL receptor (familial hypercholesterolaemia). A level of over 200 mg/dl is known to be a risk factor for heart disease. For total cholesterol: Less than 200 is desirable, 200 to 239 is considered borderline high, over 240 is considered high.
