1. Noun. An acute lung disease of the newborn (especially the premature newborn); lungs cannot expand because of a wetting agent is lacking; characterized by rapid shallow breathing and cyanosis and the formation of a glassy hyaline membrane over the alveoli.


Medical Definition of Hyaline membrane disease

1. A respiratory disease of the newborn. Often associated with prematurity or maternal diabetes. This disorder is characterised by a lack of pulmonary surfactant, a substance which increases pulmonary compliance and prevents collapse of the pulmonary air sacs. (27 Sep 1997)
