Medical Definition of Group II mycobacteria

1. Mycobacteria that produce a yellow pigment even when grown in the dark; when grown in the light, the pigment is orange. These organisms behave as do saprophytes in humans and are nonpathogenic to laboratory animals. Synonym: scotochromogens. (05 Mar 2000)
