Formed by the union of the dorsal vein of the great toe and the dorsal venous arch of the foot, ascends in front of the medial malleolus, behind the medial condyle of the femur, and traverses the saphenois hiatus in the fascia lata to empty into the femoral vein in the upper part of the femoral triangle.
Synonym: vena saphena magna, large saphenous vein, long saphenous vein.
