1. Noun. (chemistry) A form of isomerism in which, in one isomer two atoms or groups are on the same side of the plane of a double bond or ring, whereas in the other isomer they are on opposite sides; the first is the cis- and the second the trans- isomer. ¹

1. A form of isomerism displayed by unsaturated or ring compounds where free rotation about a bond (usually a carbon-carbon bond) is restricted; e.g., the isomerism of a cis-or trans-compound as in oleic acid and elaidic acid. Compare: cis-, entgegen, trans-, zusammen. (05 Mar 2000)
