Medical Definition of Gastrooesophageal reflux disease

1. A disorder where a backwash of gastric juices (acid) into the oesophagus lead to inflammation and pain. Symptoms include heartburn, indigestion, increased belching and upper abdominal pain. Complications include oesophageal stricture. Treatment is with antacids, H2 antagonists and proton pump inhibitors. Synonym: reflux oesophagitis. (12 Jan 1998)
