Medical Definition of Furazolidone

1. A nitrofuran derivative with antiprotozoal and antibacterial activity. It has been used in giardiasis and in bacterial intestinal infections. Furazolidone acts by gradual inhibition of monoamine oxidase. Pharmacological action: anti-infective agents, local, anti-infective agents, urinary, antitrichomonal agents, monoamine oxidase inhibitors. Chemical name: 2-Oxazolidinone, 3-(((5-nitro-2-furanyl)methylene)amino)- (12 Dec 1998)
