Medical Definition of Fenfluramine

1. A centrally active drug that apparently both blocks serotonin uptake and provokes transport-mediated serotonin release. It is used in the treatment of obesity, and has been suggested as treatment for several psychiatric disorders thought to involve serotonergic systems. Unlike most appetite depressants it tends to cause central nervous system depression rather than stimulation. Pharmacological action: appetite depressants, serotonin agents, serotonin uptake inhibitors. Chemical name: Benzeneethanamine, N-ethyl-alpha-methyl-3-(trifluoromethyl)- (12 Dec 1998)
