Medical Definition of Equine influenza

A highly contagious upper respiratory infection of horses and other equids caused by equine strains of influenza virus type A.
It is characterised by fever and respiratory signs similar to but more severe than those of equine rhinopneumonitis; oedema of the lower trunk and limbs (epizootic cellulitis) may occur; the disease is frequently fatal when secondary bacterial pneumonia intervenes.
