Medical Definition of Diiodothyronines

1. Endogenous thyronine derivatives formed by the deiodination of t3 or reverse t3. They are believed to stimulate thyroid hormone-regulated functions as weak agonists by acting via the same receptors that mediate t3 actions. Have been used to detect foetal or infantile hypothyroidism by determination of their concentration in amniotic fluid, maternal sera and cord sera. The 3,3'- and 3,5-isomers are known. (12 Dec 1998)
