Medical Definition of D-aminolevulinic acid
1. NH2CH2COCH2CH2COOH;an acid formed by d-aminolevulinate synthase from glycine and succinyl-coenzyme A; a precursor of porphobilinogen, hence an important intermediate in the biosynthesis of haematin. ALA levels are elevated in cases of lead poisoning. (05 Mar 2000)
