Medical Definition of Cromolyn sodium

1. A chromone complex that acts by inhibiting the release of chemical mediators from sensitised mast cells. It is used in the prophylactic treatment of both allergic and exercise-induced asthma, but does not affect an established asthmatic attack. Pharmacological action: anti-asthmatic agents. Chemical name: 4H-1-Benzopyran-2-carboxylic acid, 5,5'-((2-hydroxy-1,3-propanediyl)bis(oxy))bis(4-oxo-, disodium salt (12 Dec 1998)
