Medical Definition of Cortical layer
1. Sub plasmalemmal layer of tangled microfilaments anchored to the plasma membrane by their barbed ends. This meshwork contributes to the mechanical properties of the cell surface and probably restricts the access of cytoplasmic vesicles to the plasma membrane.
