1. An alpha-2 adrenergic agonist that crosses the blood-brain barrier. Clonidine's central actions reduce sympathetic tone. It is used as an antihypertensive agent, and has also been used in the treatment of migraine and in the diagnosis of pheochromocytoma. Pharmacological action: adrenergic alpha-agonists, antihypertensive agents, sympatholytics. Chemical name: 1H-Imidazol-2-amine, N-(2,6-dichlorophenyl)-4,5-dihydro- (12 Dec 1998)
