1. The largest of the subarachnoid cisterns between the cerebellum and the medulla oblongata; may be divided into a dorsal cistern located between the cerebellum and dorsal surface of the medulla (cisterna magna) and a lateral cistern located between the cerebellum and the lateral aspect of the medulla.
