1. A technique of immobilising cells by growing microbes or other microbial organisms, usually embedded in extracellular polymers such as implanted medical devices, which adhere to surfaces submerged in, or subjected to, aquatic environments. They are glued together to form microbial communities which are highly resistant to both phagocytes and antibiotics. A layered culture of microorganisms growing on a surface that they have created themselves by secreting polysaccharides and glycoproteins. (26 Jun 1999)
