Medical Definition of Band III protein

A 90 kD protein embedded in the surface of the human erythrocyte membrane, identified as the major anion transport/exchange protein. When the red blood cell is in the lungs, brings chlorine ion into the cell in exchange for bicarbonate.
Analogous proteins exist in other erythrocytes. A dimeric transmembrane glycoprotein, with binding sites for many cytolasmic proteins, including ankyrin, on its cytoplasmic domain.
