Medical Definition of Atrophic vaginitis
1.
Inflammation of the vaginal mucosa secondary to thinning and decreased lubrication of the vaginal walls. This condition is typically caused by a decrease in oestrogen, as occurs after menopause.
Common symptoms include vaginal soreness, vaginal itching, pain with intercourse and possible bleeding after intercourse.
Treatment includes topical oestrogen containing creams and/or the use of oral oestrogens.
