Medical Definition of Aryl sulphatase

1. Enzyme that catalyze the hydrolysis of a phenol sulfate to yield a phenol and sulfate. Some arylsulfatases are inhibited by sulfate (type II) and some are not (type I). Aryl sulfatase A, B, and C have been separated. A deficiency of arylsulfatases is one of the causes of metachromatic leukodystrophy (leukodystrophy, metachromatic).
