Medical Definition of Arachidonate lipoxygenases

1. Enzymes catalyzing the oxidation of arachidonic acid to hydroperoxyarachidonates (hpetes). These products are then rapidly converted by a peroxidase to hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acids (hetes). The positional specificity of the enzyme reaction varies from tissue to tissue. The final lipoxygenase pathway leads to the leukotrienes. Registry number: EC 1.13.11.- (12 Dec 1998)
