Medical Definition of Aminotransferase

1. A family of enzymes that catalyse the transfer of an amino group from an alpha-amino acid to an alpha-keto acid, as in the transfer from glutamic acid to oxaloacetic acid, to form aspartic acid and alpha ketoglutarate. One reactant is often glutamic acid and the reactions employ pyridoxal phosphate as co-enzyme. (04 May 1997)
