Medical Definition of Acetylcysteine

A white, crystalline powder used as a mucolytic agent for adjunct therapy in bronchopulmonary disorders to reduce the viscosity of mucus and facilitate its removal. It is administered by instillation or nebulization. It has also been shown to have antiviral effects in patients with HIV due to inhibition of viral stimulation by reactive oxygen intermediates.
Pharmacological action: antiviral agents, expectorants, free radical scavengers.
