1. A country in northern africa. Its capital is tripoli. The general geographical area has been known since ancient times to the phoenicians, greeks, and romans. It has been in the hands of the italians, the british, the germans, and the french. Libya became independent in 1951. Although the name is very ancient and appeared in egyptian hieroglyphics as early as 2000 b.c., the meaning is not known. (12 Dec 1998)
